Our Sustainability Goals and Actions

GOAL ACTION
ENVIRONMENTAL 1. Improve water resource management 1. Protect and restore watersheds by developing watershed management plans for watersheds. To include the reduction/correction of effects of watercourse siltation.
2. Reduce both public and private water consumption through the implementation of water conservation practices.
3. Partner with adjoining local governments to protect City water supply through the implementation of wellfield protection plans.
4. Develop a new Waterfront Master Plan that strongly considers public access to the waterfront.
2. Reduce ecological footprint (focus on enhancing green space) 5. Reduce commuter traffic by developing an integrated transportation plan that considers the relationship between different modes of transportation. (trails, bike paths, public transit etc.)
6. Develop planning policies to protect the connectivity of green spaces and existing vegetation.
7. Develop a tree-protection policy.
3. Reduce green house gas emissions 8. Continue with Partners for Climate Change Protection program and set GHG emission reduction targets.
9. Encourage the use of alternative energy technology and design in land and building development.
10. Conduct energy audits of municipal buildings/infrastructure to identify avenues to improve energy efficiency.
4. Increase food security 11. Develop a public education campaign about the overall implications of sustainable foods and food security.
12. Work in partnership with community based organizations to develop a community garden.
13. Develop a procurement policy or buy local food mandate for the City.
ECONOMIC 5. Develop and support creative business clusters through cross-sector collaboration 14. Promotion of downtown through infrastructure that promotes social culture (street music, art installations, art kiosks)
15. Partner with community-based business development organizations to focus on business skills development and training for artists, young people and newcomers
16. Develop a common area which enables artists to come together to present and sell their art in a central location.
17. Make kiosks available to small independent artists or business to reduce operating costs for new entrepreneurs or artisans.
6. Effectively manage and maintain existing infrastructure. 18. Develop a strategic replacement plan for aging water, sewage and road infrastructure.
19. Develop a city-wide storm water management plan and corresponding site design stormwater management policies.
20. Review the City policy and planning framework to ensure that City infrastructure and development planning is more pedestrian and active transportation centered.
7. Strengthen City Community Partnerships with business, academic and nonprofit sectors 21. Establish a working group, of business, academic, non-profit and public stakeholders, to create a common vision from divergent mandates.
22. Partner with stakeholder groups to share and promote sustainable initiatives underway in the City.
8. Encourage more sustainable development 23. Undertake a review of City Official Plan, Zoning Bylaw, Subdivision Bylaw and Engineering Standards to ensure ideas contained in the ICSP are reflected in these documents.
24. Review the Official Plan actions with responsible parties to ensure that more dense development is permitted in the core so as to discourage urban sprawl.
25. Meet with developers and the community to discuss and remedy any potential barriers which would discourage the reuse and reclamation of existing buildings and/or brownfield sites.
GOAL ACTION
SOCIAL 9. Maintain vibrant social networks 26. Include a directory of events for local established community groups that lists current events, meetings etc.
27. Focus on establishing/improving social spaces in the City (City amenities).
28. Develop new community information packages highlighting social services such as transit, parking, access to City Hall, neighborhood gatherings, and social groups.
29. Plan for the 2014 Celebration of Birthplace of Confederation.
10. Community ownership of the plan 30. Develop a participatory monitoring and evaluation plan that includes a strategy for community education and communication.
31. City sponsorship of public speakers (professionals on Sustainability) to educate public on relevant sustainability issues.
32. Develop workshops for all City staff so they have a clear understanding of the ICSP and how it applies to their role.
11. Community safety and security 33. Review planning policies to ensure that safety considerations are present in the design of all developments.
34. Continue to pursue the recommendations contained in the Police Services Strategic Plan 2009-2011.
12. Increasing accessibility and inclusivity to services 35. Develop municipal partnerships and outreach with various social community groups to assess whether accessibility needs for all citizens are being met. (including assessing housing needs both for physical and financial capacity)
36. Develop select multi-lingual publications through partnerships with community groups.
37. Consider the needs of an aging population in housing, infrastructure and programming design.
CULTURAL 13. Cultural events in the winter season. 38. Partner with local artists, musicians and schools to host community classes over the winter.
39. Partner with academic institutions to host a sustainability lecture series.
40. Work with artist/cultural groups to develop a gallery or cultural tour.
41. Use existing public transportation infrastructure to offer public transportation from City Centre to/from outside City to increase attendance at events.
14. Recognizing and preserving Charlottetown heritage. 42. Involve more groups (i.e., aboriginal, Acadian, immigrants)in heritage events.
43. Increase knowledge of island heritage by advocating for a provincial museum.
44. Promote traditional skills and way of life (knitting, building, food production/preparation, etc.) through community workshops and demonstrations.
15. Increased health and well-being through active lifestyles. 45. Ensure there are activities available for all demographics in City recreational programming.
46. Better promote the City Activity Program Booklet.
47. Seek out and promote community active lifestyle groups (i.e., walking group/hiking groups.)
48. Groom more cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails in the City.
