The City of Charlottetown is launching a new lunchtime program called "Fun in the City's Greenspace", which will take place in Rochford Square, every Wednesday in July and August, from 12 - 1 p.m.

Fun in the City's Greenspace has a diverse range of free programming. The programming will provide an opportunity for people who live, work, or visit Charlottetown to enjoy the City's heritage square, while taking part in a fun, organized activity. The goal is to encourage use of the greenspaces, promote healthy active lifestyles, and social activity. The types of activities range from exercise classes, such as yoga and tai chi, to lawn games, such as washer toss and bocci ball, and much more.

Picnic tables and blankets will be available for participants who would rather relax and eat their lunch. The Charlottetown Public Library will also be participating most Wednesdays, with books for all ages that the public can borrow directly from the park with their library card.

"By offering new activities each week, we hope to reach people of all different interests, demographics, and mobility levels," said Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy, Chair of Environment and Sustainability committee.

The scheduled programming meets a number of the goals and actions outlined in the new Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, including:

  • Encourage more programming in the City's greenspaces (e.g. yoga in the park, games and social activities);
  • Explore opportunities to use existing City spaces in new ways;
  • And, continue to provide opportunities for seniors to be involved in the community.


July 5 - Yoga

Bring your yoga mat and enjoy a class suitable for all levels and ages, lead by Samantha Sambrooke from the Maritime Yoga College.

July 12 - Kung-Fu

Kung fu uses breath, relaxation and alignment to boost the body's vitality and power. This Chinese Internal Martial Arts practice is beneficial to all ranges of ability and experience. Harmony Wagner, certified instructor with the North American Tang Shou Tao Association, will introduce the basic principles of movement, breath and martial spirit of kung fu.

July 19 - Meditation

The outdoors is a wonderful atmosphere for practicing mindfulness and meditation - learn how to be in the moment, and experience mindfulness and meditation through breath, body and the five senses.

July 26 - HIIT Fitness

HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.

August 2 - Swing Dance

Get started in the wonderful world of swing dancing! Energetic, basic, and easy-going- come and learn to dance in a friendly, supportive environment- just for fun!

August 9 - Yoga

Bring your yoga mat and enjoy a class suitable for all levels and ages, lead by Samantha Sambrooke from the Maritime Yoga College.

August 16 - Tai-Chi

Taoist Tai Chi® arts involve deep stretching with a full range of motion and continuous turning of the spine. Rather than depending on tension and the development of hard muscle tissue, these arts develop a body that is relaxed and strong at the deepest levels. The gentle internal movements are balanced throughout the body and have a calming effect on the mind.

August 23 - Belly Dance

Learn the basics of Bellydance as taught by skilled instructor, Samantha Gauthier. During this class, you will learn a beautiful, low-impact dance form that welcomes all ages, body types, genders, and nationalities. While toning the core, encouraging good posture, and improving flexibility.

August 30 - Community Jam Session

Bring your instrument or just yourself and join others in the community for this laid-back jam session. Come to play or just to listen! Musicians of all kinds and skill levels welcome ☺

*All programming is FREE and beginner friendly.
