2015-02-12 - Charlottetown’s Sport Tourism Brand Selected As Finalist for National Award

The City of Charlottetown's sport tourism brand SCORE! has been selected as a top-three finalist for a Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) 2015 PRESTIGE Award.

PRESTIGE Awards are the CSTA’s marquis Program Recognizing Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games and Events. The goal of the annual awards is to shine a spotlight on the dynamic Canadians, places and events that are building the growing sport tourism industry in Canada.

SCORE! Is a finalist under the CSTA Sport Tourism Organization of the Year category, which recognizes organizations or groups of individuals that have set a positive example for attracting visitors to a community for sporting events.

"The City of Charlottetown continues to be a leader in Canada’s sport tourism industry and that is evident in the awards that SCORE! wins or is nominated for and in the number of high-profile sporting events hosted here," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "SCORE! has become a national example of how sport tourism can have a positive impact on a community and we’re pleased it has once again been chosen as a finalist for this prestigious national award."

SCORE! is an initiative of the City of Charlottetown that was created in 2005 to expand the lucrative sport tourism industry within the Capital City. Managed by the City’s Events Development Officer, Wayne Long, SCORE! attracts and assists in the hosting of sport events in Charlottetown that offer a pronounced opportunity for economic, tourism and community growth. SCORE! attracts events worth millions of dollars annually to the provincial capital.

"The CSTA’s PRESTIGE Awards take on an even more special meaning during Canada’s Year of Sport as we celebrate the key role sport plays in our communities and our nation," said Rick Traer, CSTA CEO. "On behalf of the CSTA, I want to congratulate each of the PRESTIGE finalists who are all builders and contribute to making Canada a world leader in sport tourism."

The other finalists for the Sport Tourism Organization of the Year Award are Sport Surrey and Sport Tourism London.

This ninth edition of the CSTA PRESTIGE Awards will be presented at a luncheon event on March 31 in Toronto at the Sheraton Centre. The PRESTIGE luncheon takes place in conjunction with CSTA’s annual Sport Events Congress (March 30 to April 1), Canada’s largest annual gathering of sport and tourism professionals, event managers and industry suppliers.
