The City of Charlottetown has rescheduled its Heritage Day celebrations to Tuesday, February 24. The event will include an outdoor exhibit celebrating the traditional mainstreets of the city and an awards ceremony to honour individuals or organizations in the community who have worked hard to preserve and celebrate municipal heritage.

The annual Heritage Awards will be presented at 12 p.m. (noon) at The Guild, 111 Queen Street. Awards will be presented for publications about Charlottetown’s history and for the restoration and renovation of historic properties.

Properties:
• 104 - 106 Prince Street – Andrea Battison and Doug Mills
• 34 Mt. Edward Road – Pat and Donna Sheehan
• 25-31 King Street – Ben Murphy

Publications:
• Born – by Deidre Kessler and illustrated by Brenda Jones
• Charlottetown Then and Now – by Scott MacDonald
• PEI Pottery Company ¬– by Catherine Hennessey

The Heritage Day exhibit, titled "Celebrate Mainstreet", is an outdoor gallery in storefronts throughout the downtown. Almost 100 historic images, ads and artefacts will be shown at 18 different sites until March 3. The self-guided tour offers the public the opportunity to learn about the city’s history, while enjoying the many services the downtown has to offer. Prior to the award ceremony at noon on Feb. 24, participants will be given a sneak peak and tour of the outdoor exhibit. Those planning to attend are asked to dress warmly and meet at The Guild at 11 a.m.

Harry Holman, historian and relative of the founder of R.T. Holman Ltd., a company that opened a location on Grafton Street in 1924, will give a brief presentation on the history of the mainstreets of Charlottetown as part of the Heritage Day events.

Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee will also present the Catherine G. Hennessey Heritage Award, which was established in 2011 in honour of the City’s long-time historian, author, and heritage activist. It is presented annually to an individual or organization whose efforts have increased the appreciation of Charlottetown and whose views have stimulated love for the community.
