2015-03-04 - Volunteers Wanted: The Countdown to the 2015 Acadian Games Has Begun

With a little over 100 days to go until the opening  of the 2015 Acadian Games (Jeux de l'Acadie), Islanders are invited to sign up to volunteer for this sporting event being hosted by the City of Charlottetown.
"Charlottetown is a leading sport tourism destination and it is because of events like the Acadian Games that we continue to see success in this area," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We're excited to host delegations from all four Atlantic Provinces and look forward to welcoming more than 1,100 athletes and 2,000 supporters as part of the Games. These young athletes will participate in both sporting and cultural events over five days and have the opportunity to experience out well-known Island hospitality and all Charlottetown has to offer."
The slogan for this year's Games is "Yousque l'Acadie rencontre la Confédération" (Where Acadie meets Confederation). It pays tribute to Charlottetown as the gathering place for these athletes, much like the Fathers of Confederation who congregated in our beautiful city in 1864.

The Games will be held June 26 to 30. Sporting events include track and field, para-track and field, badminton, soccer, volleyball, mountain biking, mini handball, ultimate Frisbee and hockey-kayak. Cultural events include improvisation and a Battle of the Bands.

"We are looking for 800 volunteers to provide support during the Games, from security, to first aid, to being directly involved with specific sports," said Games Chairperson, Émile Gallant. "We are looking for individuals who speak English, French or both. We hope many of the 17,000 bilingual Islanders will come forward to lend a hand."

For those interested in volunteering, a registration form is available in English or French on the Games website at 2015.jeuxdelacadie.org or by contacting the coordinator at jeuxdelacadie2015@carrefourisj.org.
