2015-04-13 - City of Charlottetown to Host Public Forum on Cosmetic Pesticides

The City of Charlottetown will host a public forum on April 27 to gather feedback on the proposed draft bylaw to regulate cosmetic pesticides in the capital city.

The Cosmetic Pesticides Forum will be held at 7 p.m. in the Georgian Room at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel. The City’s Sustainability Officer will present the draft bylaw and provide an overview of the new legislation that grants limited power to municipalities to regulate the use of non-domestic pesticides. The public will be given an opportunity to provide feedback on the draft bylaw and ask questions.

"This public forum is the next step to implementing a bylaw. Ideally, we would have liked to have it in place this year, but that timeline wasn’t realistic," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We recognize the sense of urgency for a cosmetic pesticides bylaw, but we also want to ensure we do this right the first time and don’t miss any steps in the process, such as ensuring the public has an opportunity to provide feedback on the bylaw before it is official."

Additional information and a copy of the draft bylaw are available at www.charlottetown.ca by clicking on the Cosmetic Pesticides Forum button.

"The legislation that was passed by the provincial government last fall does not give municipalities the power to take cosmetic pesticides off of store shelves. Because of that, we are limited in what we can enforce through a bylaw," said Councillor Bob Doiron, Chair of the City’s Environment and Sustainability Committee. "We want to make sure the public understands what our limitations are and is supportive of what we have been able to draft in the proposed bylaw."

Feedback on the cosmetic pesticides bylaw can be submitted at the forum on the 27th or, in advance, to: pesticideforum@charlottetown.ca
