International Bike to Work day is today (May 15) and the City and Cycling PEI are participating and encouraging others to bike today.

Bike to Work day is one of many initiatives underway as part of the implementation of the City’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). One of the goals of the plan is to reduce the ecological footprint of the City through a focus on reducing commuter traffic. The carbon emissions of the city are greatly reduced when commuters use trails, bike paths or travel by public transit rather than traveling one person to a car.

Research completed for the Regional Active Transportation Plan (2012) show that in 2006 that 15 per cent of Charlottetown residents cycle or walk to work.  As more bike routes are made available and more people become interested in cycling, the City anticipates this number will grow.
