2015-05-26 - Charlottetown Releases RFP to Complete Universal Water Meter Program

The City of Charlottetown has released its Residential Water Meter Installation Program Request for Proposals. The RFP will allow the City to hire a firm to complete the Charlottetown universal water meter program.

The Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility requires all flat-rate customers to switch to metered service by December 31, 2019 with the intention of protecting the City’s water supply and reducing overall consumption. To make the switch easier on Utility customers, residential meters will be provided and installed for existing flat-rate customers who are connected to water and sewer in the Capital City.

"We are proud of our citizens for their continued conservation efforts, especially those who signed up to voluntarily switch to metered service in the past," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We appreciate the public’s continued support as we move toward the completion of the universal water meter program. This program is instrumental for our collective water conservation efforts and is necessary for future projects, continued growth, and the protection of this limited and precious resource."

The deadline for RFP submissions is June 15, 2015. It’s anticipated the successful firm will begin water meter installations in July. Information sessions will be held during the course of the installation program to keep the public informed of the progress and schedule.

"Applications for voluntary water meter service are still coming in and still being accepted," said Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the City’s Water and Sewer Utility committee. "The commitment to conservation shown by our community is tremendous and encouraging. To support that, we will continue to accept applications from Utility customers who wish to volunteer for metered service even after the work tied to the RFP for the universal water meter program begins. I think the reason this program has taken off and has had such support is because we’re seeing real conservation advocates in Charlottetown. People are saving money by switching to the metered rate and being on the metered system also allows them to better track the amount of water they use on a daily basis. We’re looking forward to completing this universal water meter program."
