2015-05-28 - Charlottetown to Celebrate 250 Week

The City of Charlottetown will celebrate its 160th birthday and the 250th anniversary of Samuel Holland’s declaration of the Capital City with fun, free activities for the whole family.

Charlottetown 250 Week will take place June 8-14. The celebrations will include a tribute unveiling in honour of Samuel Holland, a pancake breakfast sponsored by Smitty’s, a Community Tree Planting with volunteers from RBC, a skateboard and BMX competition sponsored by Outer Limit Sports, and the traditional Natal Day parade and Family Fun Day in the Park – among other activities.

"Captain Samuel Holland, as the Surveyor-General in the 1700s, played a tremendous role in shaping PEI in terms of its settlement and land ownership," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "This anniversary ties nicely into our annual Natal Day traditions and provides an opportunity to celebrate our history and Charlottetown’s 250 years as the Capital City of Prince Edward Island."

One of the highlights for Charlottetown 250 Week is the Community Tree Planting, which will take place in Connaught Square on Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m. The public can help plant some large calibre trees and there will be nature themed games and other activities for children. City councillors and other community partners will also be planting their sponsored barrels. Anyone interested in planting a barrel should contact Jill Stewart by Friday, June 5 at 902-566-5548 or jstewart@charlottetown.ca

"We’re pleased to have the traditional Natal Day pancake breakfast included in 250 Week, along with the Family Fun Day in the Park and a Seniors’ Social. These events are always a big hit with the community," said Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy, Chair of the City’s Economic Development, Tourism, Art and Culture committee. "The schedule of events for 250 Week and Natal Day is designed to celebrate our history and our city. The goal is to offer fun activities for all ages and I think we’ve accomplished that. I hope everyone will join us from June 8-14."

As part of the Family Fun Day in the Park activities, some of the characters from The 2015 Charlottetown Festival productions will join the celebrations in Victoria Park. The Confederation Centre will also be offering special Islander Appreciation ticket prices for the 2015 Charlottetown Festival.
