2015-06-02 - 250 More Volunteers Needed to Ensure Successful Acadian Games

With 23 days to go before the start of the Jeux de l’Acadie 2015 (Acadian Games), 250 more volunteers are needed to ensure that the Games are a successful event for the thousand young participants coming to PEI, said Games Chairperson Émile Gallant.

"It’s an exciting time for these participants who have worked very hard to qualify in their regional competitions to earn a place on their provincial teams," said Mr. Gallant. "Some have great potential as future elite athletes and the Games are a stepping stone for them. For others, the Games represent an opportunity to learn the value of physical fitness. And for all of them, the event is an opportunity to meet other youth from Atlantic Canada and make lifelong friendships."

Volunteers are needed in various areas such as security, first aid, site preparation, assisting out of province delegations, food service, etc. Volunteers can speak English, French or both.

"The Acadian Games is designed for youth ages 11 to 16. We want them to enjoy their involvement and feel encouraged and supported in their activities," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "To pull off a successful event that ensures these youth walk away from the Games on June 30 with a smile on their faces, we need a strong volunteer base. I encourage all those who can spare a few hours between June 26 and June 30 to join us and get involved in supporting these young athletes and the 2015 Acadian Games."

The Games are being held in Charlottetown June 26 to 30. Sporting events include track and field, para-track and field, badminton, soccer, volleyball, mountain biking, mini handball, ultimate Frisbee and hockey-kayak. Cultural events include improvisation and a Battle of the Bands.

To volunteer or for more information please call the Games coordinator at 902-368-1895, ext. 203.
