2015-06-02 - Charlottetown to Present at First-Ever Atlantic Canada Event Summit

The City of Charlottetown has been invited to deliver a Best Practices session at the newly established Atlantic Canada Events Summit taking place June 8-9 in Moncton, New Brunswick.

As a leader in event-hosting within the region, Charlottetown’s successes continue to garner attention. In particular, Charlottetown has seen tremendous success through its sport tourism initiative, SCORE, which was recently named the 2014 Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) Sport Tourism Organization of the Year.

The City’s Events Development Officer, Wayne Long, a CSTA Industry Builder award-winner and past National Board member, will present a best practices session on impacts and benefits from event hosting.

"As an award-winning event hosting destination, Charlottetown is frequently invited to present its success stories to municipalities across the country, at national conferences, as well as at educational institutions and for community organizations and private groups," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We applaud the efforts of the City of Moncton and Events Moncton in taking a leadership role in the establishment of the Summit and look forward to continuing to share our stories and grow the industry."

The Atlantic Canada Events Summit will bring together political, community and events leaders from all four Atlantic provinces with the goals of increasing collaboration with event hosting in Atlantic Canada, examining the sharing of event best practices and enhancing opportunities with events for the region.

The Summit will take place against the backdrop of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, the world’s largest women’s sport event, taking place in six host cities across the country from June 6 – July 5; match play opens in Moncton on June 9.

Sport tourism is a $5.4 billion industry in Canada and is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors. A growing number of Atlantic Canadian communities are using events and sport hosting as a community economic development initiative. These events attract new visitors and enhance awareness of the destinations.

The Summit will also feature a keynote address from Grant MacDonald, the past Chair of the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance who has worked in sport and events in Atlantic Canada for many years.
