2015-06-09 - City Reminds Public of Tobacco Free Policy

The City of Charlottetown wishes to remind the public that smoking and the use of tobacco in any form is not permitted at City-owned and operated indoor or outdoor facilities.

A tobacco free policy was implemented by the City in 2009. It also applies to official City of Charlottetown functions and all areas in and around City-owned and operated indoor or outdoor facilities.

"Our goal with our recreational and sporting facilities is to promote health and fitness, and this policy aligns with that goal," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "Council recognized the health hazards of second-hand smoke and felt it was critical to have that supported by policy, joining those across the country who have implemented similar policies. We appreciate the cooperation of our residents and visitors in continuing to adhere to this policy now and in future years."

Councillor Mitchell Tweel said it’s important to remind the public of the policy to continue to maintain smoke free facilities.

"The time has come to remind the public of this policy’s existence because we’re seeing people smoking around our facilities on occasion and that’s unacceptable," said Councillor Tweel. "When I pushed this resolution forward in 2008 for implementation in 2009, it was my intention to ensure that we continue to promote and follow through on the policy for the protection of all citizens. It’s advantageous to us all to have this policy in place and I intend to make sure it stays that way."

As an added reminder, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department is installing tobacco free, no smoking signs in visible locations throughout the city to add to the ones already in place.

The policy applies to community centres, sports fields and courts, parks and playgrounds, arenas, swimming pools, the boardwalk and trails, as well as office areas, change rooms and washrooms, indoor and outdoor spectator viewing areas and other areas within the perimeter of all facility ground.
