2015-09-04 - Charlottetown Recruiting Volunteer Firefighters

The City of Charlottetown’s Fire Department is launching its volunteer firefighter recruitment campaign on Tuesday, September 8.

Application packages will be available from September 8 to October 2 at the Charlottetown Fire Department Station No. 1, 89 Kent Street. All volunteer firefighters in Charlottetown receive training and leadership development, insurance coverage, fellowship, and annual honorariums.

"Volunteer firefighters play such an important role within the City’s protective and emergency services," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "I want to thank all of the individuals who have served as volunteers over the past number of years and encourage new volunteers to take on the challenge."

"Our Fire Department largely depends on the commitment from our volunteer firefighters," said Councillor Jason Coady, chair of Protective and Emergency Services. "It is an extremely selfless service that these volunteers provide within our community and we appreciate their willingness to face new challenges."

The City’s two fire stations include a roster of about 80 volunteers to help with a number of duties including: rescues, fire response, vehicle and equipment operation and maintenance, and assisting with fire prevention and education programs.

"Volunteering to be a firefighter is an important and valuable commitment that you are making to your community," said Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald. "Anyone interested in both serving and helping to make a difference in their community is strongly encouraged to take the next step and become a Volunteer Firefighter, a truly rewarding experience."
