2016-05-12 - Public Service Announcement: Properly Disposing of Needles and Sharps

The City of Charlottetown wishes to remind the public about the safety procedures and protocols in place for handling and disposing of needles and sharps.

If residents or businesses find needles, sharps or drug-related paraphernalia within the City of Charlottetown, it is recommended that they avoid picking it up and immediately contact the Charlottetown Police Services non-emergency line at 902-629-4172 for proper and safe disposal.

If picking up such items is unavoidable, Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) and Health PEI recommends that adults use tongs or puncture proof gloves to pick up the needle and place it into a proper sharps disposal container. If a disposal container is not immediately available, a hard-sided puncture resistant container with a screw-on lid can be used to take the needle or sharps to the IWMC’s Household Hazardous Waste depots located at the Waste Watch Drop-off Centers. Needles and sharps should never be discarded in a waste bin.

IWMC, Health PEI and the City of Charlottetown recommend that children be taught never to pick up needles or sharps and to tell an adult if they find such items.

Additional safe needle disposal information for households can be found at: www.healthsteward.ca (Direct URL: http://www.healthsteward.ca/returns/pei?value=46.27621,-63.14578&addr=C1E2A1) or by contacting IWMC at 1-888-280-8111.
