The City of Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility Department is pleased to announce its support for a new sustainability initiative at the Bell Aliant Centre.
The Water and Sewer Utility Department is providing $1,600 for the Bell Aliant Centre to use toward its initiative called ‘Fit It Up’, which will see some of the existing water fountains at Centre retrofitted into water bottle refill stations.
"We heard about this initiative through the Community Sustainability Micro-Grant program," said Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the City’s Water and Sewer Utility committee. "Though it didn’t receive a micro-grant through that process, we felt it was something we could support through our Utility Department. It complements our sustainability efforts and encourages people to enjoy our local, natural resource."
Employees at the Bell Aliant Centre researched the volume of plastic water bottles used at the Centre and estimated that 121,860 bottles of water are consumed each year. The goal of the ‘Fit It Up’ campaign is to promote the local water resource while also reducing the number of disposable plastic water bottles used in the complex.
"The Water and Sewer Department works closely with the City’s Sustainability Officer on many projects and we’re very supportive of each other’s work," Councillor Rice said. "We see this initiative as a way to promote safe drinking water within the city and also reduce waste. We hope others feel inspired by this initiative and consider working toward their own sustainability goals."
Al Stewart, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Bell Aliant Centre, states that "the staff at the Centre deserve credit for their continuous efforts in finding ways in which to enhance the customer experience, while at the same time supporting the City of Charlottetown’s sustainability agenda." He added that, "as a premiere events venue, it is important for the Centre to always be looking to improve their offerings to athletes and event hosts."
