2016-08-18 - Details Announced for Screening of CBC and the Tragically Hip present: ‘The Tragically Hip: A Nation

The City of Charlottetown has announced final details for its screening of CBC and the Tragically Hip present: ‘The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration’. The live broadcast event will be held in the east meadow of Victoria Park on Saturday, August 20 at 9:30 p.m. The broadcast is anticipated to last three hours.

The event will be a free, non-gated, non-alcoholic event. Event goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. A friendly reminder that smoking is not permitted in Victoria Park. City Police will be on-site to ensure everyone is complying with event rules.

The event will be accessible, using guidelines from the City’s newly issued checklist "Creating Accessible Events." There will be a clearly marked and monitored accessible viewing area, as well as accessible washrooms. Designated accessible parking spaces will be available on the Victoria Park Roadway, east of the cannons. The Victoria Park Roadway will be closed to traffic beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will re-open at approximately 1 a.m. Persons with disabilities who would like to be dropped off close to the viewing area or who would like to access parking will be required to identify themselves to security personnel stationed at the park entrance, off Brighton Road.
Accessible transportation to the site is available through Pat and the Elephant. Bookings are required by 3 p.m. on Friday, August 19 to secure a spot. Arrangements can be made by calling 902-894-3339.

General event parking is located in the downtown core, the parking lot on Terry Fox Drive, or the City Parkades on Queen, Pownal and Fitzroy. The parkades will be open to the public with no charge on the weekend.

No parking will be permitted on the Victoria Park Roadway or Driveway (by the Tennis Courts) and individuals parked in these areas once the road closes at 6:30 p.m. will be asked to move their vehicles. Parking will not be permitted along Brighton Road between Ambrose Street and Queen Elizabeth Drive. Parking will also not be permitted near the intersection of Brighton Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive, Greenfield Avenue, Goodwill Avenue, Century Terrace, and Ambrose Street. The Victoria Park cycling lane and boardwalk will remain open. The Victoria Park pool and splash pad will close at 6 p.m.

The Kiwanis Dairy Bar will remain open and offer cash-only concession services during the event.

Pet owners are encouraged not to bring their pets to the concert because large crowds and noise can cause animals stress. Dogs are permitted in Victoria Park as long as they are kept on a leash and controlled.

Volunteers will be on-site in identifiable clothing. They will be accepting donations for The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research. The fund aids in the investigation of new drugs, surgical techniques and genetic therapies for brain cancers that are currently considered "unbeatable". Donations will be accepted from 8 p.m. until the broadcast begins at 9:30 p.m.
