2017-01-24 - Celebrate Islander Day in Charlottetown with Free Activities

Celebrate Islander Day in the Capital City with free, family oriented activities. The City of Charlottetown is hosting Islander Family Fun Day on Monday, February 20. The event includes a pancake breakfast, family swims, bowling, performances by Island youth, a family skate and more.

"This event provides an opportunity for families to access free activities on Islander Day and enjoy time spent together in Charlottetown," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "Islander Day was established to give residents a short winter break and we feel it’s a time for celebration. These activities are for all ages and we invite everyone to come join us."

Islander Family Fun Day kicks off at the West Royalty Community Centre at 8 a.m. with a free pancake breakfast. The family skate begins at 9:30 a.m. at Simmons Sports Centre and the Bell Aliant Centre is offering two family swims at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Free tickets are required for the family swims and will be available at Bell Aliant Centre, beginning February 13. There is a limit of six tickets per family.

The Guild will feature a high-energy show with talented Island youth singing, dancing, and fiddling. The performances begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Family Glow-in-the-Dark bowling is being offered at The Alley in Murphy’s Community Centre at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Lanes must be pre-booked by calling 902-892-7311, beginning February 13. There is a limit of one lane per group, with a maximum of six bowlers per lane.

The Island Storm invite the public to their Home Game against the Moncton Miracles on Islander Day at 2 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre. Thanks to a donation by Irving Energy, there are 500 free youth tickets available for this game. Tickets will be offered on a first-come basis, beginning February 15. There is a limit of two youth tickets per family.

"We’re pleased to be able to offer Islander Family Fun Day again," said Councillor Bob Doiron, Chair of the City’s Economic Development, Tourism, Arts and Culture committee. "We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the public about this event in the past so hopefully the weather cooperates and we’re able to make the most of this winter holiday together through these great, free activities."
