The City of Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility Department wishes to advise the public that processed digester contents (a liquid form of the biosolids) from the Charlottetown Pollution Control Plant will be transported from the plant for agricultural usage beginning Monday, May 22 for approximately two weeks.
This work allows the Utility to complete maintenance on the Plant’s digesters. This is routine work that takes place every five to seven years. This year’s work also involves upgrades to the digesters.
The material is a nutrient-rich organic material resulting from the treatment of domestic sewage in the treatment facility. When treated and processed, these residuals can be recycled and applied as fertilizer to improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth.
During the removal period at the Plant, the public is advised that there will be heavy truck traffic from the Plant to the communities of Stanhope, Covehead Road and Union Road. Impacts on traffic flows are not anticipated.
All work is being carried out in accordance with the Prince Edward Island Department of Communities, Land and Environment approval.
