The Parks and Recreation Department wishes to remind the public that the City of Charlottetown Dog Control Bylaw requires pet owners to keep their animals on a leash and pick up after them.
Parks and Recreation staff has noticed that some pet owners have been allowing their pets to run in City parks without a leash, specifically at the Longworth Sports field. There also seems to be a number of people not picking up after their animals.
The Dog Control Bylaw states that anyone who lets their pet run at large within the boundaries of the City is guilty of an offense and anyone who allows their pet to defecate on public or private property other than their own without removing it immediately is also guilty of an offense.
Anyone who commits an offence under the Dog Control Bylaw can be fined between $100 and $500 for a first offence, between $200 and $1,000 for a subsequent offence and/or imprisonment for up to 90 days.
