The City of Charlottetown will celebrate youth during a two-day event designed to offer fun activities that youth may not typically be able to access.
The event, Celebration of YOUTH!, will take place from Friday, September 26 until Saturday, September 27 as part of the City’s 150th anniversary celebrations of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference.
"When we discussed how we wanted to mark this important milestone in the city, we decided we wanted to find ways to engage and involve youth in the celebrations," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "The vision for this event is to provide experiences in sport, recreation, art, dance, film and music through activities youth may not typically have exposure or access to. From shooting hoops with the Island Storm to learning choreography at the School of Performing Arts, youth in our community will have lots to do for this two-day celebration."
The Celebration of YOUTH! activities include: skating at the CARI Complex; music and songwriting with Music PEI’s Zack Squires and Katie McGarry, and Ripped Paper; shooting hoops with Island Storm basketball players; dance and choreography at the Holland College School of Performing Arts; a skateboarding and BMX competition; an Indie-Pop Show featuring award-winning Charlottetown youth band, Larque; a ball hockey tournament; a Cineplex movie and popcorn; rookie tennis at Victoria Park; a family swim at the CARI Complex; Chef’s and Foodies at the Farm Centre; and more!
The Celebration of YOUTH! Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday, September 26 at 9:30 a.m. at Murphy’s Community Centre. The ceremony will include Island Storm basketball players. Celebration of YOUTH! will wrap up with a closing concert of youth music, songwriting, film, dance and fun at Solid Rock Café on Saturday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the opening and closing ceremonies.
"The Celebration of YOUTH! is free for youth ages 9-18," said Deputy Mayor Stu MacFadyen. "We encourage all youth in our community to check out the schedule and come out to celebrate with us."
Community Partners include Music PEI, Island Media Arts Cooperative, Island Storm Basketball, Solid Rock Café Youth Group, Teen Zone – Murphy’s Community Center, Cineplex, Farm Centre, Pix by Lorne, House-Front Productions, Hot 105.5, the Holland College School of Performing Arts and the City of Charlottetown Youth Advisory Board.
