Youth in the Capital City are preparing for two days of fun and mentorship as part of the City of Charlottetown’s Celebration of YOUTH! on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27.
Several local youth have been selected to participate in the celebrations to mentor other young people.
"We’re excited to see local youth coming on board for this event and getting involved," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We have youth mentoring other young people, youth-led events, youth volunteers, and even youth involved in our venues for the various activities. We are really looking forward to this event and hope that all youth will check out the schedule, find something they are interested in, and join their peers for a real celebration of our future – our youth."
The youth mentors have been selected based on their skills in arts, sports, recreation or music. Isaiah Jabbour, all ages show youth mentor, was the first to come on board.
"I am stoked to participate because we, youth, have a lot to offer and this is an opportunity to show that," said Jabbour.
Singers/songwriters Katie McGarry and Zack Squires, along with local youth band Ripped Paper, will all be hosting a music and songwriting session on Friday, September 26 at 1 p.m. They will be sharing their music, performing and introducing the mechanics of songwriting. The hope is a song will be created from the session and performed at the Youth! Presents! Closing Ceremonies for the Celebration of Youth on Saturday, September 27 from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. at Solid Rock Café, in the First Baptist Church at 235 Prince St. (entrance off Fitzroy Street).
Some of the other Celebration of YOUTH! activities include: skating at the CARI Complex; shooting hoops with Island Storm basketball players; dance and choreography at the Holland College School of Performing Arts; a skateboarding and BMX competition; an Indie-Pop Show featuring award-winning Charlottetown youth band, Larque; a ball hockey tournament; a Cineplex movie and popcorn; rookie tennis at Victoria Park; a family swim at the CARI Complex; Chef’s and Foodies at the Farm Centre; and more!
