A published history of the Charlottetown Fire Department is now available to the general public. "When Duty Calls" is a newly released book by author and former Charlottetown firefighter John Bond. The book encapsulates the formation of the Charlottetown Fire Department in 1855 until amalgamation in 1995 when the Parkdale and Sherwood fire departments joined the City department.

Mr. Bond will be at the Charlottetown Fire Station No. 1 on Kent Street from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12 to autograph copies of the book.

"The City of Charlottetown is proud of its rich history and an important part of that history is our fire department," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "This book highlights and pays tribute to the decades of dedicated firefighters who have served the department and the city. It touches on the fires that impacted our community landscape and documents the historical progression of equipment, location and response time that has shaped and allowed the department to become the dependable service that it is today."

Copies of "When Duty Calls" can be purchased for $24.95 at the Kent Street fire station, Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., while supplies last. The book is also available in limited quantities at Murphy’s Pharmacies in Charlottetown. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go toward the restoration and maintenance of historical equipment and memorabilia at the fire station.

"Every little boy, at some point in their childhood, wants to be a fireman. I was one of the few who got his wish, and I guess all of these years later I am still a firefighter at heart," said author and retired firefighter John Bond. "’When Duty Calls’ is a tribute to the firemen I served with and all of the other little boys and girls who grew up to be firefighters. Perhaps only when we see fire boiling out the windows of a building and watch firefighters working their way into the flaming structure, do we understand a little of the courage and the sense of duty that sends men and women into such danger. Hopefully this book will further that understanding."
