The City of Charlottetown kicked off its 250 Week celebrations this evening (Monday, June 8) with the unveiling of a tribute for Samuel Holland.

The City is celebrating its 160th birthday and the 250th anniversary of Samuel Holland’s declaration of the Capital City with fun, free activities for the whole family this week.

The tribute unveiling was in honour of Captain Samuel Holland, who was Surveyor-General in 1764 and tasked with surveying British holdings in the New World. Captain Holland recommended what is the current site of Charlottetown. He suggested it be one of the primary Island towns and be named Charlotte Town in honour of Queen Charlotte, wife of George III of England. In 1765, Charlotte Town was designated as the capital city of the province. A granite rock with a plaque inscription of this history now sits in the cul-de-sac by the PEI Convention Centre.

Charlottetown 250 Week continues until June 14, 2015. The celebrations will include a pancake breakfast sponsored by Smitty’s, a Community Tree Planting with volunteers from RBC, a skateboard and BMX competition sponsored by Outer Limit Sports, and the traditional Natal Day parade and Family Fun Day in the Park – among other activities.
