2015-07-13 - Charlottetown Residential Water Meter Installation Program Begins

Charlottetown City Council awarded the contract for the Residential Water Meter Installation Program to Bevan Bros. Limited at its regular monthly meeting on July 13.

The Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility requires all flat-rate customers to switch to metered service by December 31, 2019. To make the switch easier on Utility customers, residential meters will be provided and installed for existing flat-rate customers who are connected to water and sewer in the Capital City.

Bevan Bros. Limited was awarded the contact in the amount of $1.2 million. The work is expected to begin this year.

"The intention of the Residential Water Meter Installation Program is to protect the City’s water supply and reduce overall consumption in Charlottetown," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We’ve seen an increase in conservation efforts over the past few years and this four-year project will complement those efforts, strengthening the protection of this limited resource."

City staff will meet with representatives of Bevan Bro. Limited to create a map that shows the phases of the project, what areas will be worked on first and when residents can expect to hear from the contractor.

Information sessions will be held during the course of the installation program to keep the public informed of the progress and schedule.

"One thing we want to make clear is that this project is going to take some time and it’s going to be a while before the contractor gets to every residence to install a meter," said Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the City’s Water and Sewer Utility Committee. "Residents don’t have to wait to get a meter. We are still taking volunteers – those who wish to jump ahead in line per say – to get a meter installed sooner than later. People are saving money by switching to the metered rate and being on the metered system also allows them to better track the amount of water they use on a daily basis.  We want to accommodate anyone who wishes to reap those benefits right away."
