2015-11-18 - Council Adopts Public Art Policy

The City of Charlottetown Council has adopted a new Public Art Policy created by the Arts Advisory Board to help advise Council on cultural matters.

Council adopted the Policy on November 9 at a public meeting. The new policy is available in the Quick Links menu on the City’s website at www.charlottetown.ca

"The City of Charlottetown has beautiful streetscapes and we continue to enhance our streets with wonderful public art created by talented artists from the Island and around the world," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "This policy is important for the cultural development of our City. We needed to formalize our processes for the establishment of these important pieces of work and this policy has accomplished that."

The Arts Advisory Board put a significant amount of work into the creating of the policy and Mark Sandiford, Chair of the Board, said it was well worth the effort.

"We started with public consultation and visioning to ensure that our citizens’ voices were captured," Sandiford said. "Cultural development is important in Charlottetown; it is important to City Council and it is important to the public. We were pleased to work on this project to ensure the highest quality public art is showcased and that we all work toward the goal of improving the city we live in and are so proud of."

The Public Art Policy provides a vision for art in the City’s public spaces. It also outlines the steps for any future call for public art on City-owned property. The policy places a priority on commissioning work from Island artists and ensures that a fair and transparent peer-review process is followed in selecting public art projects.
