The City of Charlottetown will celebrate its artistic and cultural leaders at the Arts and Culture Awards in June.
Nominations (including self-nomination by an artist) are now being accepted. The deadline to submit is Friday, April 29 at 12 p.m. (noon).
The awards ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
The City of Charlottetown hosted the inaugural Arts and Culture Awards as part of its 1864 Anniversary Celebrations in 2014. The awards were designed to honour those who significantly contribute to the arts in the community.
"Our arts and cultural sectors are very important and we want to continue to take a leadership role as a champion of artistic and cultural creativity, expression and innovation," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "These awards give us an opportunity to formally recognize the world-class artists and artisans in our community and pay tribute to their contributions to society."
The event is hosted in Charlottetown every two years and awards are presented in the following categories: Emerging Artist, Artistic Excellence, Lifetime Achievement, Culture Industry and Cultural Event.
The selection of winners will be determined by an independent panel appointed by, but separate from, the Charlottetown Arts Advisory Board. The panel is chaired by one (non-voting) member of the Arts Advisory Board.
"It is important for people working in arts and culture to be recognized for what they contribute to the community," said Mark Sandiford, Chair of the Charlottetown Arts and Culture Advisory Board. "Imagine what Charlottetown would be like without its amazing artists, musicians, writers, performers and creative entrepreneurs. The awards remind us never to take this for granted."
The Charlottetown Arts Advisory Board oversees the administration of the awards. The board members are: Mark Sandiford, Chair; John Morris; Maria Driscoll; Claire Nantes; Sharon Larter, Barb Groome Wynne, and Darrin White.
Those nominated for an award must live, work or make a substantial contribution to the arts and cultural sector in Charlottetown.
