2016-05-18 - Firefighters to Participate in Fundraising Challenge for Fort Mac

The City of Charlottetown Fire Department has accepted the Fort McMurray Boot Drive challenge from the Crossroads Fire Department who issued the challenge to raise money for fire service members affected by the wild fires in Fort McMurray.

Charlottetown firefighters will be taking donations at the Atlantic Superstore at the corner of Belvedere and University avenues on Friday, May 20 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

"Our hearts go out to everyone in the Fort McMurray area," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "What they are going through is unimaginable. There have been many wonderful fundraising efforts taking place across the country, and I commend these Island firefighters who want to reach out to their comrades. The Fort McMurray firefighters have put their own lives at risk to help fight the wildfires and some have also experienced the loss of their own homes. This fundraiser is a great way to show our support."

The Crossroads Fire Department will be fundraising at the Sobeys in Stratford on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.

"On behalf of the City of Charlottetown Protective and Emergency Services committee, I want to thank the Charlottetown Fire Department for stepping up and working with the Crossroads Fire Department on this fundraising," said Councillor Jason Coady, Chair of the committee. "I’m sure any assistance for Fort McMurray is greatly appreciated, so I encourage everyone to support the efforts of these local firefighters. Every little bit helps."

All monies raised by Island fire departments participating in the challenge will go directly to the Fort McMurray fire service members who have lost their homes while they were protecting others.
