The City of Charlottetown extends congratulations to Port Charlottetown as they welcome a record number of inaugural cruise ships in the 2016 season.
The first inaugural vessel is The Ocean Dream, arriving on Wednesday, June 15, with Charlottetown as its only stop in North America. This unique Japanese ship is also known as the Peace Boat and the journey focuses on conflict resolution and educational components. The Ocean Dream departed from Japan on April 12 and, after 107 days around the world, the voyage will return to Japan on July 27. After departing from Charlottetown, this vessel with continue to Argentina.
"The Charlottetown Harbour Authority has done an excellent job of expanding and strengthening the cruise industry in Charlottetown and making it a vital part of tourism each year," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "We want to welcome the thousands of passengers who will visit the Capital City throughout the season, and we congratulate the Charlottetown Harbour Authority on another record breaking year."
Inaugural ships include the Zuiderdam from cruise line Holland America and luxury cruise, Crystal Serenity, from Crystal Cruises. Two new chartered vessels called Azamara Quest and Silver Explorer will also visit Charlottetown. In addition, the capital city will see a visit from the Viking Star of Viking Ocean Cruises and The Regent, Seven Seas Mariner.
"The economic impact from these cruise ships is incredible," said Councillor Bob Doiron, chair of the City’s Economic Development, Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee. "The passengers will visit shops and restaurants while they are on the Island, contributing to the local economy but also to the atmosphere in the city. It’s wonderful to see, and we thank the Charlottetown Harbour Authority for their efforts."
