2016-06-16 - Charlottetown and Summerside Partner on Sport Tourism Strategy

The City of Charlottetown and the City of Summerside have formed a partnership and developed strategic priorities to increase the impact of sport tourism, strengthen both cities as sport tourism destinations and leverage the hosting reputations and capacities of each municipality.

One of the goals of the partnership is to jointly bid on high impact signature sport tourism events that the cities don’t have the infrastructure or funding capacity to bid on individually. Another shared goal is to co-create a new sport tourism event to host together.

"Sport tourism has become a driving force in Charlottetown that stimulates substantial economic and tourism prosperity for our accommodation, restaurant and retail sectors," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "Hosting sport events also presents a tremendous opportunity to showcase all that our city has to offer as a destination, encouraging return tourism visitations."

The cities engaged MRSB Consulting Services to facilitate a process with both municipalities to explore and define a shared vision and develop strategic priorities for 2016 until the year 2021. Proactively pursuing these opportunities will help both cities take advantage of the economic benefits associated with the fast growing sport tourism market.

"Sport and event tourism is very important to our local economy," said Summerside Mayor Bill Martin. "The City of Summerside is committed to growing this sector and supporting our business community, as evidenced by the Council’s adoption of the first strategy in 2015. Sport and event tourism allows us to showcase our community’s hospitalities and stimulates community pride during and after each event."

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance has reported that sport tourism contributed $5.2 billion from visitor expenditures to the Canadian tourism industry in 2012 and sport tourism revenues grew by 5.3 per cent from the previous year, making it Canada’s faster growing tourism segment.

By sharing costs, resources and infrastructure, Summerside and Charlottetown hope to be better positioned to win competitive bids for hosting high caliber events that may not otherwise be possible without the partnership.
