2017-01-09 - Charlottetown Launches Programs for 2017 Winter Active Campaign

The Charlottetown Parks and Recreation Department has launched its 2017 Winter Active Campaign with free activities designed to encourage people of all ages to be more active during the winter months.

"Our direct delivery programming, along with events and initiatives like this Winter Active Campaign, are all intended to improve the quality of life in Charlottetown," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "Regardless of the season, there is a range of activities that we hope encourage people to live active, healthy lifestyles. We hope people to take advantage of the programming that is available, and embrace the winter and all that this great city has to offer."

A free snowshoeing program is being offered on Sundays, beginning January 15 until March 5, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Victoria Park (snow conditions permitting). A limited number of snowshoes will be available for use. A Go!Skating program is also available. It includes free family skates on Sunday, February 5 from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Cody Banks Arena and Sunday, February 19 from 1:50 p.m. until 2:50 p.m. at the Simmons Arena.

A free 10-week Learn to Run program will take place on Wednesdays beginning January 18 from 6:15 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre (UPEI). Interested individuals can email Christopher Drummond at cdrummond@charlottetown.ca to preregister for the Learn to Run Program.

A free winter walking event will take place along the Victoria Park boardwalk on Sunday January 22 from 1 – 3 p.m. This informal event encourages residents to enjoy a winter walk along the boardwalk. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be provided at the end of the boardwalk near Terry Fox Drive.

The following trails/boardwalks are also available for winter walking: the boardwalk from Victoria Park to the Friendly Pharmacy, Victoria Park Trails, Beach Grove Trails and the Confederation Trail within City limits. For Cross-Country skiers, the City maintains groomed ski trails at Victoria Park and Belvedere Golf Course. Ski trail maps are available at the Parks and Recreation Department at City Hall, 199 Queen Street.

"Our Winter Active Campaign offers activities and programs that are not only free, but are open to all ages and abilities," said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. "This annual campaign complements the many fantastic programs and initiatives that are available through our Parks and Recreation Department and I’d like to thank the staff and partners who help make this possible."

More details of the campaign can be found on the City’s website at www.charlottetown.ca by clicking on the Winter Activities button (Direct URL: www.charlottetown.ca/winteractive.php). Please note that outdoor activities are weather dependent.
