2017-01-26 - Charlottetown to Host RCMP Musical Ride

The City of Charlottetown has been chosen as one of the host cities for the RCMP Musical Ride cross-country tour in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday.

"What better place to celebrate the 150th birthday of this great nation than in the City of Charlottetown – the Birthplace of Confederation," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "We are looking forward hosting this prestigious event and encourage the community to join us."

The tour begins in May and the Musical Ride will return to Ottawa in late June to participate in Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa. The tour will then resume in early July and will continue until September.

The Musical Ride gives the public an opportunity to experience the RCMP's heritage and traditions. It also helps raise funds for local charities and initiatives across Canada.

Quick Facts
• The first recorded public display of the Musical Ride was in 1901, in Regina, Saskatchewan.
• The iconic image of the Mountie on horseback is recognized around the world. In addition, the Musical Ride is entrenched in Canadian heritage and identity.
• The 2016 Musical Ride Tour raised nearly $1 million for non-profit organizations in Manitoba and Southern Ontario.
• Tour highlights this year include the first visit to Labrador (July 22-23), and the first visit to the Yukon since 1995 (August 11-13).
• The Musical Ride travels to every province on a four-year rotational basis. The four-year rotation will resume in 2018 with visits to Northern Ontario and British Columbia.

"We are excited to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday with cities and towns across the country and help raise money for their communities in which we perform," said Inspector Patrick Egan, Officer in Charge of the Musical Ride.
