The Charlottetown Fire Department responded to a call this morning at Atlantic Warehousing (5 Garfield Street), following a call about a chemical leak.

The Charlottetown Fire Department Station 1 and Station 2 responded to the scene. The building and the surrounding area, within 150 feet, were evacuated. Businesses within the area were notified of the incident.

"The cause of the chemical leak is unknown at this time," said Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald. "The Charlottetown Fire Department was called to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. and all precautionary measures were put in place to secure the scene."

The Provincial Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Team was called to the scene as part of the Fire Department’s protocol when dealing with chemicals. Also on the scene were: Island EMS, Provincial Fire Marshal and Occupational Health and Safety. The area has been secured and Garfield Street, from Walker Drive to Strawberry Lane, will be closed until the cleanup is complete.
