A City of Charlottetown Police Services' investigation has resulted in the largest number of drug related arrests in a single day in Charlottetown’s history.

Operation Clean Sweep, a culmination of four months of policing, targeted multiple, high-level drug trafficking operations. On Thursday, January 29, Police raided several properties and 40 individuals have or will be facing charges. Sixteen property searches were conducted which resulted in the seizure of illegal substances with an estimated street value of between $400,000 and $500,000.

The Charlottetown Police Crime Unit seized substances such as: cocaine, pharmaceutical opiates, methamphetamine and marijuana along with 11 vehicles and various weapons.

The basic premise for Operation Clean Sweep was to carry out an enforcement effort, specifically to target high profile suppliers of illicit drugs and the other individuals involved in the drug trade within the City of Charlottetown.

"Operation Clean Sweep would not have been possible without the extensive investigation lead by Charlottetown Police Services with assistance from our policing partners from the Summerside and Kensington Police Services, the RCMP (locally and Codiac, Moncton) and the Criminal Intelligence Service of PEI (CISPEI)," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "Chief Paul Smith and his officers are to be commended for their commitment and thoroughness with Operation Clean Sweep."

"Operation Clean Sweep demonstrates to our community that the Charlottetown Police Services are aware of the issues and are working hard to ensure our City continues to be a great and safe place to live" said Councillor David MacDonald, Chair of Protective and Emergency Services. "Our Police Services are second to none."
