New for 2014, the Water and Sewer Utility Department will be offering an Energy Star® Clothes Washer Rebate Program to encourage water conservation in all City homes. Customers can receive one rebate of $100 when they purchase a water-efficient top or front-loading clothes washer.
Energy Star® certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 35% less water than regular clothes washers. A full-sized Energy Star® certified clothes washer uses, on average, 57 litres of water per load, compared to the 87 litres used by a standard machine. Over the machine's lifetime, that is a savings of 102,000 litres of water.
"We are pleased to announce this new rebate program for City Utility customers," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "We want to ensure we continue our support for increasing water efficiency in Charlottetown homes and businesses."
The Energy Star® Clothes Washer Rebate begins on Monday, February 10 and is not the only rebate program being offered through the Utility Department. The Toilet Replacement Rebate Program has also been re-launched for 2014. This program provides rebates of $60 to $75 to customers that replace an old in-efficient toilet with a new low-flow model. The Utility is also continuing the Showerhead Exchange Program that allows customers to bring in their old in-efficient showerhead (uses 2.75gpm or more) and receive a free Kohler 2.0gpm Awaken showerhead. All rebates and exchanges are limited, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
"We continue to be impressed with the uptake for these rebate programs," said Councillor Edward Rice, chair of Water and Sewer Utility. "Charlottetown residents and business owners have shown great commitment to conserving water."
