The 19th annual Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival will be returning to the Charlottetown Event Grounds this September 18-21, 2014, for four days jam-packed with world famous PEI shellfish, international shuckers and chefs, and the best of East Coast entertainment.

He'll be on stage each day teaching you the ins and outs of cooking with shellfish, signing cookbooks and having lots of laughs."

Chef Michael Smith will host the largest signature event of the PEI Fall Flavours Festival, Feast and Frolic kicking off the Shellfish Festival on Thursday September 18th. With his signature high-energy interactive food event style Chef Michael says, "Bring your A-game, it's a lot more than just a dinner." The chefs and students of the Culinary Institute of Canada have a delectable four course shellfish feast planned and guests will also enjoy tasting Prince Edward Island oyster growers farm raised oysters during the Oyster Grower of the year reception.
"Our Government understands that tourism plays a key role in strengthening our region’s economy. The PEI International Shellfish Festival has an impressive and successful history and is an excellent example of effective collaboration," said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Today, I am very pleased to announce that our Government, through ACOA, is investing $105,000 to support programming and marketing efforts for the 2014 Festival."
Chef Michael will also host the Garland Canada International Chef Challenge which is returning to the Festival tent for the audience to watch live as 12 top chefs compete in elimination rounds creating dishes highlighting PEI shellfish for the $10,000 grand prize. The Garland Canada International Chef Challenge is by invitation only with one spot in the competition dedicated for an Island chef. The winner of the Savour Food & Wine show's local food award will receive an automatic entry into the competition. The Savour Food and Wine shows will take place on May 22, 2014.
"With every passing year the Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival gets bigger and better and the 2014 edition will be no exception," said Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson. "The festival does a great job attracting visitors to the province in September, and helps anchor the annual Fall Flavours Festival. It is a tremendous asset for the province’s tourism industry and a great way to highlight the Island’s world renowned seafood."
The Shellfish Festival takes place under a big white tent at the Charlottetown Event Grounds. Chefs and shuckers travel from afar to compete in culinary competitions and oyster shucking competitions vying to take home cash prizes and the title of "PEI Shellfish Festival champion". Local chefs, shuckers and bartenders take part in the festivities at the PEI Potato Seafood Chowder competition, Shiny Sea Oyster Shucking competition and Mott's Best Caesar in town competition. Over $25,000 in cash prizes are handed out during the festival.
"This culinary festival celebrates local delicacies, fresh seafood and chowders while highlighting expertise from around the world in a fun, competitive arena," says Mayor Clifford Lee. "Food and fun – a winning combination to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the event which established Charlottetown as the Birthplace of Confederation. The PEI International Shellfish Festival is one of many great annual events on Charlottetown's Summer Event Calendar."
