2014-05-14 - City Welcomes Royals, Flies Prince of Wales Flag

The City of Charlottetown will fly the royal colour purple with its Prince of Wales Prize Flag beginning Thursday, May 15 to welcome Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles, Prince of Wales, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will arrive in Charlottetown on Victoria Day, May 19.

Prince of Wales Prize Flag will be flown for the duration of their visit as a sign of welcome and respect from the City of Charlottetown.

"We are looking forward to the visit from Their Royal Highnesses, especially as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Birthplace of Confederation and the 1864 Charlottetown Conference," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "I’ve said before that 2014 will be a year filled with historical moments as our City celebrates its history and our nation’s shared sense of Canadian heritage. Having Their Royal Highnesses visit our great City is one of those historical moments. That’s why I encourage everyone to help us welcome them by attending one of the events planned during their visit."

A free evening of family activities for the Royal Visit is taking place at Province House on Monday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. There will be multicultural, theatrical and musical entertainment, as well as hot dogs and icecream. Tim Chaisson and Band, Catherine MacLellan, Patrick Ledwell, Wade Lynch, Paper Lions and The Meds are performing. There will be fireworks over the Charlottetown Harbour at 9 p.m.

A full itinerary for the Royal Visit can be found at: www.gov.pe.ca/royaltour. The Prince Edward Island Royal Visit is being coordinated jointly by the provincial protocol office and Canadian Heritage. The City of Charlottetown is assisting in the Victoria Day celebrations at Province House.
